Lowers the amount of phosphorus in blood of patients receiving kidney dialysis.

When Renagel Should Not Be Used:
You should not use Renagel if you have had an allergic reaction to sevelamer, if you have low levels of phosphates in your blood (hypophosphatemia), or if you have a bowel blockage.
How to Use Renagel:
Liquid, Tablet
- Your doctor will tell you how much of Renagel to use and how often. Your dose may need to be changed several times in order to find out what works best for you. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
- It is best to take Renagel with food or milk.
- Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, chew, break, or open.
- To use the powder for oral liquid: Pour the entire contents of the packet in an empty cup. Mix the powder with 30 or 60 milliliters (mL) of water. Stir the mixture and drink it within 30 minutes.
- Measure the oral liquid medicine with a marked measuring spoon, oral syringe, or medicine cup.
- If you are taking other medicines, take them at least one hour before or three hours after you take sevelamer. If you need help deciding the best times to take your other medicines, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Carefully follow your doctor's instructions about any special diet.
If a dose of Renagel is missed:
- If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
How to Store and Dispose of Renagel:
- Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
- Ask your pharmacist, doctor, or health caregiver about the best way to dispose of any leftover medicine after you have finished your treatment. You will also need to throw away old medicine after the expiration date has passed.
- Keep all medicine away from children and never share your medicine with anyone.
Drugs and Foods to Avoid While Taking Renagel:
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using ciprofloxacin (Cipro®), levothyroxine (Levothroid®, Levoxyl®, or Synthroid®), medicine to treat seizures, or medicine for heart rhythm problems.
Warnings While Using Renagel:
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have trouble with swallowing, severe stomach or bowel problems (such as constipation), or have had surgery on your digestive system.
- If your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse, call your doctor.
- Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits while you are using Renagel. Be sure to keep all appointments. Blood tests may be needed to check for unwanted effects.
Possible Side Effects While Using Renagel:
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing.
- Fever, chills, and sore throat.
- Red or black stools.
- Severe constipation.
- Severe stomach pain, cramping, or burning.
- Vomiting of material that looks like coffee grounds.
If you notice these less serious side effects while taking Renagel, talk with your doctor:
- Bloating, gas, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, stomach discomfort, or upset stomach.
- Headache.
If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by Renagel, tell your doctor.
