Vytorin Prescription Drug Information
Ezetimibe/Simvastatin (By mouth)
Ezetimibe (ez-ET-i-mide), Simvastatin (sim-va-STAT-in)
Lowers cholesterol and triglycerides (fatty acids) in your blood. This is a combination of 2 medicines. It contains a cholesterol absorption inhibitor (ezetimibe) and an HMG-CoA inhibitor (simvastatin), which is sometimes called a "statin."

When Vytorin Should Not Be Used:
You should not use Vytorin if you have had an allergic reaction to ezetimibe or simvastatin. Do not use Vytorin if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have active liver disease.
How to Use Vytorin:
Tablet
- Your doctor will tell you how much of Vytorin to use and how often. Your dose may need to be changed several times in order to find out what works best for you. Do not use more medicine or use it more often than your doctor tells you to.
- You may take Vytorin with or without food.
- Take the medicine in the evening, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
- If you are also using cholestyramine (Questran®), take it at least 2 hours after or 4 hours before you take Vytorin.
- Carefully follow your doctor's instructions about diet and exercise. Vytorin is only part of a complete plan for lowering cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood.
- Vytorin comes with patient instructions. Read and follow these instructions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
If a dose of Vytorin is missed:
- If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to use the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
How to Store and Dispose of Vytorin:
- Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
- Ask your pharmacist, doctor, or health caregiver about the best way to dispose of any leftover medicine after you have finished your treatment. You will also need to throw away old medicine after the expiration date has passed.
- Keep all medicine away from children and never share your medicine with anyone.
Drugs and Foods to Avoid While Taking Vytorin:
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are also using hormones or steroids, cholestyramine (Questran®), digoxin (Lanoxin®), fenofibrate (Tricor®), gemfibrozil (Lopid®), nefazodone (Serzone®), niacin, or an antibiotic (such as clarithromycin, erythromycin, fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, telithromycin, Biaxin®, Diflucan®, Ery-Tab®, Ketek®, Nizoral®, or Sporanox®). Tell your doctor if you are using cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®) or danazol (Danocrine®).
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are using a blood thinner (such as warfarin, Coumadin®), certain blood pressure medicines (such as amiodarone, verapamil, Calan®, or Cordarone®), or medicine to treat HIV or AIDS (such as indinavir, lamivudine, nelfinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir, stavudine, zidovudine, Combivir®, Crixivan®, Epivir®, Invirase®, Kaletra®, Norvir®, Videx®, Viracept®, or Zerit®).
- Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while you are using Vytorin.
Warnings While Using Vytorin:
- Using Vytorin while you are pregnant can harm your unborn baby. Use an effective form of birth control to keep from getting pregnant. If you think you have become pregnant while using the medicine, tell your doctor right away.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you have severe kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, a history of muscle pain or weakness, or a history of liver disease. Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol on a regular basis.
- Chinese patients who are taking large amounts of niacin (greater than 1 gram per day) together with Vytorin may have an increased risk for muscle injury. If you are Chinese and take large amounts of niacin (Niacor®, Niaspan®), you may need a different dose of Vytorin.
- Check with your doctor right away if you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if you also have a general feeling of discomfort or illness, fever, or dark-colored urine. These could be symptoms of serious muscle problems called myopathy or rhabdomyolysis.
- Make sure any doctor or dentist who treats you knows that you are using Vytorin. You may need to stop using Vytorin several days before having surgery or medical tests.
- Your doctor will need to check your blood at regular visits while you are using Vytorin. Be sure to keep all appointments.
Possible Side Effects While Using Vytorin:
Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing.
- Dark-colored urine or pale stools.
- Fever, chills, cough, runny nose, sore throat, and body aches.
- Muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness.
- Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, or pain in your upper stomach.
- Yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes.
If you notice these less serious side effects while taking Vytorin, talk with your doctor:
- Constipation, diarrhea, gas, or mild stomach pain.
- Headache.
- Joint pain.
- Mild skin rash.
If you notice other side effects that you think are caused by Vytorin, tell your doctor.
